"We had a tough time getting it going tonight. Not sure if we were in it mentally." - CJP forward James Lawrence

"Just got straight up beat tonight. One of the first times our size really hurt us. We got killed defensively." - CJP forward Jim Hammen

"We are not tall nor that athletic thus we have to play smarter and with more fire than our opponents. As our losing season dictates, we have failed to do such things as of late. Anyways, here is to next season and the hopeful reemergence of Curtis J. Phillips Basketball." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

"The first ten minutes of the game was pretty even and then their inside game wore us down. We ended up giving too many lay-ups to win the game. But now we can look forward to next season." - CJP guard Matt Donnelly

Game Notes

CJP center Josh Lawrence missed the game due to time constraints. Team CJP endured just its second ever losing season. The team is now 10-11 all-time playing in the East Lawrence Rec Center.

"My play was comparatively catatonic and note to self: eat food as it gives one nutrients." - CJP guard Ariel Ludwig

"We couldn't quite get into rhythm and were battling back from behind most of the time. Made a good effort and hit some shots to keep it close but never could get over the hump." - CJP guard Matt Donnelly

Quotes

"We looked for each other and hit open shots. Matt particularly played well." - CJP guard Ariel Ludwig

"Even though we only had four players for about the first seven minutes of the game it felt as if we were in control the entire game. Bian, James, and Matt's shot making abilities were key late in the second half. A much needed and solid win for Curtis J. Phillips Basketball." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

"We came out early and had a good offensive flow and kept the lead the whole game closing them out." - CJP guard Matt Donnelly

Game Notes

CJP forward Jim Hammen missed the game due to illness. CJP center Lane Leedahl missed the game due to work related travel. CJP center Josh Lawrence missed the first half of the game due to traffic conditions.

Bian will be bring much needed depth to Curtis J. Basketball tonight as the team will not only be playing its first ever double header but will also be without the services of Jim Hammen and Lane Leedahl. "I have only played in one official game with Bian but he and Ari have a past and he was superb in the game we played together and you could easily tell by watching him play that he is capable of great things. Other than that he is quite a mystery to me and I have no idea what to expect." said Sondreal. Bian is set to wear the number six jersey which was formerly worn by former CJP great Charles Morris.

11.01.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (2-2) plummets to Picked Last (2-2) 59-64

Game Quotes

"What the f**k!" - CJP guard Ariel Ludwig

"An overall lack of energy, desire, and focus is why we lost tonight. If James wouldn't have made an amazing ten three-pointers tonight we would have lost big time. Oh and has anybody seen our defense?" - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

"Dug ourselves in too big of a hole and couldn't quite make the complete comeback." - CJP forward James Lawrence

Game Notes

CJP forward Jim Hammen missed the first half of the game due to being suspended for a technical foul he received last week. Hammen missed the second half due to a prior commitment. Team CJP is now 0-2 this season when sporting their white jerseys.

10.25.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (2-1) yields to Blouses (3-1) 48-61

Quotes

"We played tough the first half and our shooters shot well from three. But in the second half we lost our rhythm and shots stopped falling. They were really athletic and wore us down as the second half went on." - CJP guard Brett Goedeke

"We got rj'd!" - CJP guard Ariel Ludwig

"It seemed from the get go that as a team we were out of energy and that is horrible any game let alone against the fastest and most athletic team in the league." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

"Shots stopped falling. We started playing frantic and Jim's favorite ref didn't let him down and trapped him into a "T". We just need to play smart both halves." - CJP forward James Lawrence

"Do technical fouls make good birthday gifts? Jim?" - CJP center Lane Leedahl

"That was my last game. Its just not fun anymore. I get a different set of standards than anyone else. I've never even seen anyone else get called for a technical." - CJP forward Jim Hammen

Game Notes

CJP is now 0-1 this season when wearing their white colored jerseys.

10.18.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (2-0) stomachs The Dawgs (0-2) 57-50

Quotes

"Lane's horse bank three set the tone. Ari slashed well again, and we were on fire the first ten minutes. Another good showing when the opponent made their second half run to hold on to the lead." - CJP guard Matt Donnelly

"Tough second half. Everyone on our team played well. As for myself, those Dawgs kept chasing me around like I was their tail" - CJP guard Ariel Ludwig

"We played a great first half with accurate outside shooting and strong defensive rebounding. James had a couple of deep ones in a row that were devastating to the Dawgs. We were able to hold them off in the second half despite poor all around play. The Dawgs have bitching to the refs down to an art form. They are a bunch of tools other than Matt's brother." - CJP center Josh Lawrence

Game Notes

Team CJP is now 4-5 all-time against The Dawgs.

10.11.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (1-0) surmounts The Granda (0-2) 61-51

Quotes

"Nice gritty win to open the season. Tough league this year, every win will be huge." - CJP forward Jim Hammen

"Thanks to the superb athletic performance of Lane and Josh down low we were able to sneak out of there with a "W". It felt good to get back out there to run the floor and throw up a few forced shots." - CJP forward James Lawrence

"I can't believe Franklin called the timeout when they had none." - CJP center Lane Leedahl on The Granda's captain pulling a Chris Webber and sealing the victory for CJP late in the game.

"Good effort for the first time out. Ari scrapped a bit and it seems to fit in well with the team. We weathered little runs from The Granda but came out on top." - CJP guard Matt Donnelly

"Considering tonight was the first time that over half our team had touched a basketball since July, our ball movement was quite sharp. And I hope our play only rises from here on as every team in this league is capable of winning the championship." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

Game Notes

Team CJP is now 8-1 all-time in season openers and 8-7 all-time when playing in the East Lawrence Rec Center.

9.05.2011

Charitable Curtis J. at again.

Owner Curtis J. Phillips agreed today, despite the NBA lockout, to sponsor the team again this fall. "Danny Sondreal guaranteed me that the team will once again be the dominant force in Lawrence, Kansas adult hoops. He also mentioned that the games may be broadcast live on Skype and recorded for You Tube distribution." NBA coaching legend Phil Jackson, also a native of North Dakota as is Sondreal, stated in a press release. "This is great that the games are to be webcast. I told Mitch Kupchak and he will be watching for possible (Los Angeles Lakers) free agent signings from team CJP."

8.06.2011

CJP Center Charles Morris Retires

Charles Morris displaying his #6 CJP jersey one last time.
After two years of playing for Curtis J. Phillips Basketball, center Charles Morris has retired from the team. Morris is retiring from the Lawrence Parks and Rec Men's Basketball League as he is moving to San Diego, CA. Morris was the lone tall man for team CJP over the last two years as he was the only player on the team that stood over six foot, three inches. The team will miss not only his height but his smile, handsome looks, unhurried attitude, and overall basketball abilities that helped lead the team to two league championships.

The Curtis J. Phillips thanks Charles Morris for his contributions to team CJP.
Team owner and namesake Curtis J. Phillips had the following to say on Morris leaving team CJP and heading to San Diego, "I am very, very close to all of my players so I am very sad to learn that Chase is leaving the team. I understand that Chris is moving to San Diego. I got to know Chandler this summer at the 50th Legion Athletic Camp and even saw him in action on the hardwood. On one play Chip had five straight offensive rebounds...mind you he was rebounding his own shots. I am super happy that I had the chance to meet Chata and wish him the best of luck."

7.20.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (5-2) overcomes Jet Lag (6-1) 62-48

Quotes

"I took a lot of joy in ruining Jet Lag's undefeated season. They may be champs, but they didn't beat us. Kudos to Lane and the highest scoring game of his entire life. It was a beauty to watch." - CJP forward Jim Hammen

"When Charles and I found out the news 900 miles north of Lawrence, we were all smiles and inspired by what apparently was one of the finest outings by team Curtis J. Phillips." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal thoughts on an undermanned team CJP's triumphant victory over the now league champions, Jet Lag

Games Notes

Forward Daniel Sondreal and Charles Morris both missed the game due to work related travel. James Lawrence missed the game due to personal reasons. Josh Lawrence missed the game for reasons unknown. After eight sessions of play, team Curtis J. Phillips is now 51-13 all-time in LPRD league play.

7.13.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (4-2) succumbs to Trees and Threes (5-1) 54-65

Quotes

"Tough loss. If you take away the opening five minutes where that dude scored at least 20 points, we outscored that team. Ended up costing us the championship." - CJP forward Jim Hammen

"They basically didn't miss for the first six or seven minutes of the game and that was that because their early lead was too much for us to overcome. However even though our chance at a repeat came to an end, it was a fun second half as we didn't fold and ended up causing them a lot of problems." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

Game Notes

Center Charles Morris missed the game due to fatigue. Guard James Lawrence was not in action due to the birth of his son.

7.12.2011

Team CJP signs Ariel Ludwig

At 11:27AM this morning via telephone, team CJP general manager Daniel Sondreal signed guard Ariel Ludwig to a two-game guaranteed contract. Ludwig will bring much needed depth to the team as tonight CJP will be without guard James "Lights Out" Lawrence and next week the team will be without the services of Sondreal, Charles Morris, and likely Lawrence once again. "Arie is a fierce competitor that most of our team has played with or against at local church pickup games. The thing I like about him most other than his abilities is that Arie never seems to be afraid of the moment" said Sondreal. Well team CJP will definitely look for that and more from Ludwig as tonight they match-up against the (4-1) Trees and Threes in what may make or break CJP's championship hopes. If CJP should win tonight, then their game next week against Jet Lag (formerly known as Jefferson's) would be for the 2011 Summer League Championship.

Ludwig will be wearing the #00 jersey.

7.06.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (4-1) endures the Free Agents (3-2) 44-38

Quotes

"Good hard-fought win, never more than a 6 point lead the whole game, it seemed. Playoff atmosphere." - CJP forward Jim Hammen

Game Notes

CJP guard James Lawrence left the game with about ten minutes to go in the first half due to an ankle injury. CJP is now 2-0 all-time versus the Free Agents.

6.29.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (3-1) checks WTF...Are You Ewing (2-2) 66-36

Quotes

"We played another great game against that team. Something about them always seems to bring out the best in us. We moved the ball really well and got a lot of open looks. We weren't hitting from the outside as much as usual but our bigs guys hit the boards hard and got a lot of looks inside. We played great defense and kept the intensity up for most of the game." - CJP guard Brett Goedeke

"Of all the teams we have ever played What The F**k Are You Ewing is by far the most similar team to us in talent, age, and physical stature. However I believe the difference between us is that we dominate the game by passing and they try to dominate with a lot of dribbling and thus far it's 2-0 in favor of the pass." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

Game Notes

CJP had all eight players in attendance for the first time this season. Center Charles Morris has informed the team that this will be his last season as he is moving to San Diego, CA.

6.22.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (2-1) drops to the Dawgs (1-2) 40-46

Quotes

"It's frustrating to lose to a team that you think you're better than." - CJP forward Jim Hammen

"Always devastating to lose to your rivals. Have to make shots and limit second chance points, two things we failed to do last night!" - CJP guard James Lawrence

Game Notes

Guard Matt Donnelly missed his third consecutive game due to travel. CJP is now 3-5 all-time versus the Dawgs.

6.15.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (2-0) decimates Geeks 'N Sneaks (0-2) 92-29

Quotes

"Our grandma was in the stands so of course Brett, James, and I wanted to perform. Brett responded by scoring a bunch of points on fast breaks and lay-ups. James hit about ten threes. I went ahead and missed like eight lay-ups. We killed them though." - CJP center Josh Lawrence

"This team was likely the youngest and most timid team we have played and it showed as they didn't score a point until ten minutes to go in the first half." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

Game Notes

Forward Lane Leedahl missed the game to due personal reasons. Guard Matt Donnelly missed his second consecutive game due to travel.

6.08.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (1-0) surmounts Pippen Ain't Easy (0-1) 56-36

Quotes

"Did a great job being patient with their zone and moving the ball until we got a good look. Great game for the big men too, totally controlled the glass." - CJP forward Jim Hammen

"We moved the ball well against their zone. Were getting great looks all night. Charles, Lane, and Josh dominated inside, and it allowed our shooters to get lots of open looks from outside. We played pretty good defense and didn't give them too many second chance baskets." - CJP guard Brett Goedeke

"Last night you could tell there were a few cob webs on our game from having a couple of weeks off, but we managed to do a lot fundamental things well that allowed us to come away with the win." CJP guard James Lawrence

Game Notes

CJP is now 2-0 all-time versus Pippen Ain't Easy. Guard Matt Donnelly missed the game for reasons unknown.

6.07.2011

Retirement? Not quite yet for Lane Leedahl.

Temporary retirement no more! Contrary to his announcement in early May, Curtis J. Phillips power forward Lane Leedahl will be joining the team for its upcoming title defense in the 2011 LPRD Men's 4 Summer Basketball League. Leedahl was set to take the summer off due time constraints but that isn't the case anymore as he officially notified the team last week he will once again be sporting his infamous number four jersey for team CJP. With Leedahl playing, the original eight man core of CJP is still intact and should once again be in the running for another league championship.

Curtis J. Phillips (6-1) wins the 2011 Spring League Championship as they defeat Pippen Ain't Easy (2-5) 54-32

more to come.

Quotes

"Nothings better than being on top! Now let's see if we can string back to back session championships!" - CJP guard James Lawrence

"This ones for Curtis J. Phillips!" - CJP center Charles Morris

"Back to back! Yeah! Yeah! And you know that!" - Former Lakers Great Magic Johnson on team Curtis J. Phillips winning it second consecutive Spring League Championship

"I'd like to thank my wife for all her support. Finnster, you are my inspiration, and my teammates minus Jim." CJP forward Lane Leedahl

"After blowing that game in week two to the Titans I wasn't sure this was possible but here we are thanks to our love for the game and each other." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

Games Notes

CJP forward Jim Hammen missed the game due to a wedding in North Dakota. CJP is now 36-13 all-time through seven sessions of play. A record setting 15 fans were in attendance.

5.11.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (5-1) constrains the Free Agents (3-3) 52-39

Curtis J. Phillips basketball is now one win away from their second ever league championship as they defeated the Free Agents by a score of 52 to 39. In a game where neither team seemed to find much flow on either side of the ball, CJP's years of experience together combined with combative attitude overcame what otherwise could have been a disastrous night.

Prior to Tuesday night's games, CJP, the Titans, and the No Names were all square with records of 4-1. Since CJP beat the No Names, the No Names beat the Titans but the Titans beat CJP, if all teams won their final two games it would have come to overall point differential which would have likely led to the No Names being crowned champions. However that changed late Tuesday night as WTF...Are You Ewing changed the championship landscape as they defeated the Titans 41-40. Therefore if CJP should win next Tuesday, they will be the Spring 2011 League Champions for the second year in a row.

Quotes

"Lane is a beast and he will be missed next session as the team really needs him. CJP needs to throw more money at him." - CJP center Charles Morris on the news that teammate Lane Leedahl will be sitting out the 2011 Summer League

"One more season for Chris!" - CJP forward Lane Leedahl on hearing the news that teammate Chris Wallace will be leaving the team at the end of the current session

"The flow of this game was pretty drab but it was fun to watch Lane's antics and how the refs continually refuse to send Jim to the free throw line. Anyways, we are one win closer to the championship and hopefully we can take care of that next week." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

Game Notes

CJP had all nine players in attendance for the first time this season. Forward Lane Leedahl informed the team that he is going to miss the upcoming Summer League due to time constraints. Guard Chris Wallace sadly informed the team that he will no longer be with team CJP as he is moving to Kansas City.

5.04.2011

Goedeke's Consecutive Game Streak Ends at 46.

For the first time in the history of Curtis J. Phillips basketball, guard Brett Godeke was not in the lineup Tuesday night in the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Division 4 Men's Basketball League. Goedeke sent word via text message to player and general manager Daniel Sondreal simply stating, "Hey I'm not going to make it tonight, working on a research paper." With those honest and righteous words Goedeke's forty-six consecutive game streak came to an end. His consecutive game streak started October, 13, 2009 in team Curtis J. Phillips inaugural season. Goedeke's cousin and fellow CJP teammate James Lawrence had the following to say after CJP's 53-36 victory over the No Names and the first ever CJP game played without Goedeke, "As for the great streak ending, it was a saaaad day." All in all, all of his teammates were proud of his Ripken like streak and were clearly not used to playing without him as time after time no one on the team could collect a rebound which in turn was not much of a surprise to many as Goedeke along with being a top notch defender, is one of the leagues top rebounders.

It also comes to no surprise that many affiliated Goedeke's 46 to his love for the game of basketball, superb time management skills, and overall health. However late Tuesday night new light was shed on what motivated Brett Goedeke to play city league basketball through good times and bad, in sickness and health, as his other cousin and CJP teammate Joshua Lawrence said the following, "Brett always vowed that he wouldn't miss a basketball game until bin Laden was killed. A promise that he kept. That man is a true patriot."

5.03.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (4-1) overthrows the No Names (4-1) 53-36

More to Come!

Quotes

"The first half was a frustrating battle as CJP tried to find a way to put the ball in the hole and stop the tenacious rebounding of those prefer not to be named. In the second half the deepness of CJP as well as the team play proved too daunting for the short numbered opponents. Great big man play from the Center was the X-factor." - CJP guard Chris Wallace

"We survived the first half, playing ugly basketball, and then finally got the game plan right and went down to the big fellas in the second half, and everything flowed through them. Good rebounding effort as well." - CJP forward Jim Hammen

"Last nights game would've made any Big Ten fan proud as it was a physical low scoring affair. You'll never here me complain too much anytime we win. Notable performances to Chris Wallace and Charles Morris." - CJP guard James Lawrence

Game Notes

CJP guard Brett Goedeke missed his first game ever due to scholastic reasons. Goedeke's consecutive game streak ends at forty-six. CJP is now 1-3 all-time versus the No Names. The lead referee proclaimed that he was not God nor was anyone else in the building.

4.27.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (3-1) breaks WTF...Are you Ewing (1-3) 81-50

More to come..

Quotes

"Wire to wire team basketball. We stayed hungry" - CJP forward Lane Leedahl

"That's as good as we can play offensively. 60 percent on 3's and an assist on almost every basket. That was a good team we just throttled and their frustration showed." - CJP forward Jim Hammen

"Tonight was fun as it seemed anytime I passed the ball to a teammate they either drained a three or made a layup or made another pass to someone else for the score." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

Game Notes

CJP center Josh Lawrence missed his second game of the season for reasons unknown.

4.19.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (2-1) holds off The Dawgs (1-2) 45-42

There has been one constant in the Lawrence Parks and Rec's Division Four Men's Basketball League, over the past two years, which has been team Curtis J. Phillips and The Dawgs. For both teams are the only two teams who have played in every league session and have won a combined 4 out of the 6 completed league championships. Tonight the two teams met yet again with their championship aspirations on the line as both teams came into the game at 1-1. From the opening possession it was clear that The Dawgs were going to slow this game down and make it a game of patience and precision. This was personified by a half time score in which neither team had scored more than 21 points. In the second half, the pace no different but CJP's zone defense eliminated The Dawgs superior post play and forced them into an outside shooting team. That along with several quick hitting plays led by Chris Wallace, Jim Hammen, Matt Donnelly, and most notably the five consecutive points by James Lawrence with just under four minutes to play provided CJP with breathing room late in the game. For CJP found themselves up by seven with two minutes to play but then Dawgs started to do what they always due against CJP. They began fouling CJP every possession, sending CJP to the line, where once again CJP struggled to connect. As CJP missed out on several opportunities to close the game, The Dawgs found themselves with a chance to tie with six second to go. On the final play The Dawgs found their star player in Big Mike but he was immediately met by two defenders and passed it off as time expired. Thus team Curtis J. Phillips league championship hopes are still alive.

Quotes

"The Dawgs put up a fight but CJP prevailed by using zone defense as the Center was out. Shooting wasn't as on as previous outings although we found a way to get the ball in the hole. Free throws nearly plagued us but we found a way to win. Great work guys!" CJP guard Chris Wallace

"I thought we really made them work against the zone and did a great job of making it difficult for their bigs while also still contesting their outside shooters. It always feels great to beat the Dawgs." CJP guard James Lawrence

"Well, we almost had another late game meltdown but thanks to James "Lights Out" Lawrence's scoring spree we survived The Dawgs comeback attempt. And as much I don't like playing zone defense, it worked well for us tonight as it kept Big Mike and the Dawgs' other big man in check." CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

Game Notes

CJP center Charles Morris missed his second consecutive game, this time due to illness. CJP center Josh Lawrence missed yet another game due to travel. CJP is now 3-4 all-time versus The Dawgs.

4.13.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (1-1) falls in overtime to the Titans (2-0) 52-58

Vince Lombardi once said, "Fatigue makes cowards of us all", and that is what happened to team Curtis J. Phillips in their first ever game versus the Titans Tuesday night in Lawrence, KS. The entire game itself was closely contested, feisty, emotional and filled with controversial calls accompanied with several rules being overlooked. Regardless of the Titans' superiority in overall athleticism, team CJP controlled the tempo for 37 minutes of the game and found themselves up by 5 with roughly two minutes to play. However, in the closing minutes of regulation the Titans' full court press, but more importantly physical fatigue caused team CJP to waver physically but mentally as well, as they couldn't combat the Titans' full court press. Thus the Titans' tied the score up with 46 all and sent this game into overtime. Unfortunately for team CJP, they were not able to overcome their fatigue thus cowardly falling to the Titans in overtime.

Game Quotes
"We played a great thirty-five minutes of the game. Unfortunately we got a little gassed during the last five minutes, and they forced some turnovers when they picked up the defense. Some of the best basketball we have played, however some mental errors towards the end came back to beat us." CJP guard Brett Goedeke

"Overall an ok game with the exception of turnovers and one mental lapse in the end allowing the game to go to OT. With our dedicated center in Charles this game would not have been anywhere close to what it actually was. We'll get them next time fellas, sorry about the knee." - CJP guard Chris Wallace

"We had plenty of chances to win this game but due to an overall lack of energy at the end, we gave it away." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

Game Notes
CJP center Charles Morris missed the game due to a delayed flight in Atlanta.

4.05.2011

Curtis J. Phillips (1-0) overwhelms the Bad News Bears (0-1) 85-53

The Bad News Bears failed to deliver any sort of bad news Tuesday evening in their first ever league game as they fell to a seasoned Curtis J. Phillips team 85 to 53. Other than when both teams went back and forth for the first five minutes, team CJP controlled the entire game with their superb passing, superior talent, and a blistering full court press. And if wasn't for the Bad News Bear guard that scored close to forty points, this game would have been over in the first minute.

Quotes

"Lots of fast break points, lots of threes. The other team wasn't all that strong expect for that one guy." - CJP guard Matt Donnelly

"Great ball movement, great transition play..Its good to be back in the Community Building." - CJP Forward Jim Hammen

"What a rush!" - CJP center Charles Morris

"An all-around good performance by CJP. Everyone contributed to a better performance than both UConn and Butler did on Monday." - CJP guard James Lawrence

Game Notes

CJP forward Lane Leedahl missed the game due to parental duties. Team CJP is now 6-1 all-time in season openers.

Team CJP signs Chris Wallace for the Spring 2011 Season.

Former Kevin Frost (team name prior to becoming Curtis J. Phillips) guard and one time, one game CJP fill in, Chris Wallace, has signed on to team CJP for the Spring 2011 season. CJP General Manager Daniel Sondreal had the following to say on the Wallace signing, "Bringing back Chris is not only going to give us much needed depth but should also make us a better defensive team as he should be capable of guarding any guard in the league. More over Chris has the ability to break down the defense which will help create more looks for our array of shooters." He will be wearing the number 2 jersey.

Curtis J. Phillips (4-3) escapes Scroalition (0-7) 55-48

Quotes

"Good win last night for the last game of the session against a team with pretty good athletic ability and there was about ten of them. I thought we showed a lot of good ball movement and cuts. I also think we did a better job of making it harder for their guards to get their big man the ball in the second half." - CJP guard James Lawrence

"We won despite playing without a sense of urgency in the first half and likely should have won this one easily but we won. And finished the season with a winning record and here is to defending our 2010 Spring Championship come early April!" - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

Game Notes

CJP center Josh Lawrence missed the game for unknown reasons. Team CJP is now 30-12 all-time with one league championship through six seasons of play in Division 4 of Lawrence Parks and Rec Men's City Basketball League.

Curtis J. Phillips (3-3) rallies late to break the Milf Hunters (3-3) 58-54

Quotes

"We worked the ball inside really well, and got a lot of open looks on the post. Charles, Lane, and Josh worked really hard down low. Our defense was great, both halves we played really solid defense. Late in the game we had to foul, and they didn't make free throws. The zone defense we went to in the second half really helped us come back. Jim and Lane hit a couple big three's, and we pressured them really well at the end of the game. It was a great win for us." - CJP guard Brett Goedeke

"Between Lane's post work in the first half, three balls in the second half, and coaching decision to switch to the zone that sparked our second half run, he gets the game ball tonight." - CJP forward Jim Hammen

Game Notes

Guard James Lawrence missed his third game of the season for reasons unknown. Center Charles Morris fouled out of his first career game while playing for CJP.

Around the League

Scores, news and notes from week two of the Lawrence Parks and Recreation 2011 Winter Men's Basketball League Division 4:
  • The Dawgs (2-0) served notice that the league is still theirs for the time being as they hammered newcomers and 2010 Fall Thursday Night League Champions, the Old Dudes (1-1), 65-31.
  • There was no revolution for The Revolution (0-2) as they were stomped by the high scoring No Names (2-0) club 87-58.
  • A few moms may have been taken down as the Milf Hunters (1-1) outlasted Scroalition (0-2) 59-47.
Upcoming Game of the Week: The Dawgs (2-0) host Curtis J. Phillips (1-1) in the most storied rivalry in Division 4 over the past two years. Much like the Lakers versus the Celtics, the Bulls versus the Pistons of yesteryear, the two teams usually are of the elite, despise each other on and off the court and almost come to blows every game. With that intact along with CJP being the last champion before the Dawgs current back to back championship run, it will likely be the most highly contested game of the season.

Curtis J. Phillips (1-1) outwits Jefferson's (1-1) 47-31

The Curtis J. Phillips basketball team is now 3-1 all-time versus Jefferson's as they defeated them 47 to 31 on Tuesday night. In the previous three meetings between the two, the final scores were 48-44 CJP, 54-52 CJP and 36-45 Jefferson's. Tuesday night was no different for one half of basketball as Jefferson's slowed down the game and controlled the tempo. However CJP found themselves up by two at half time as the interior defense of Charles Morris, Lane Leedahl and Josh Lawrence kept the much taller Jefferson's players in check. As for the second half, CJP started to dissect Jefferson's defense and with about ten minutes to play three pointers by Matt Donnelly, Jim Hammen, James Lawrence and the aforementioned Leedahl busted the game open for CJP. That along with playing tough defense until the final minute, team CJP came away with first ever double-digit victory in the series match-up between the two teams.

Quotes

"Good win tonight against a big team that loves to ugly it up. Moved the ball really well and took quality shots. Also thoughts and prayers to Jefferson's team captain Jason Franklin, who was unable to play last night after slipping and falling on the ice....what an idiot." - CJP forward Jim Hammen

"Wonderful win tonight and here is to getting another next week." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

Game Notes

Team CJP had all eight players in attendance for the first time in six games.

Curtis J. Phillips (0-1) loses their season opener to the Old Dudes (1-0) 48-61

Team Curtis J. Phillips lost their first ever season opener Tuesday night as they fell to the Old Dudes by a score of 48 to 61. Prior to the game no one knew the makeup of the Old Dudes but as each of their players strolled into the gymnasium it became clear that a new super team had been formed. For many of CJP's players had played with and against the members of the Old Dudes in local church pickup basketball games and those players just happened to be the better ones in those games. As for the action, with team CJP playing without James Lawrence and Charles Morris, they played a two-three zone defense for the duration of the game in hopes of conserving energy and slowing down the explosive Old Dudes. That plan along with some fundamentally sound basketball on the offensive end led to a half time score of 27 to 27. However early into the second half the Old Dudes simply didn't miss from three-point land for several possessions while team CJP turned the ball over a few too many times and quickly found themselves down by double digits. Nevertheless CJP continued to play spirited basketball and kept the game competitive until the final buzzer.

Quotes

"Very good effort in a loss to a good team tonight. To shoot that poor of a percentage and only lose by 13 to a team that talented is a moral victory, if there is such a thing." - CJP forward Jim Hammen

"They were a tough team with great shooters. We played a great first half, but a lot of missed shots and turnovers in the second half made it hard to stick with them." - CJP guard Brett Goedeke

"Played tough, ran out of gas, but we kept it competitive. Good test of our character." - CJP center Lane Leedahl

Game Notes

Guard James Lawrence missed the game due to some sort of wedding planning for his upcoming nuptials. Center Charles Morris missed the game as well for he was reportedly "sick as a dog." Team CJP is now 5-1 all-time in season openers.
