Quotes

"We got off to a great start and continued our success in the second half of this statement game. Mike stepped in nicely for John who is seeking treatment for his bum finger in dispenseries throughout Washington state. Lou's buddy whose name I can't remember and Mojo's dad were the catalysts for the team's energy which was the difference in the game." - CJP forward Joe Ahmadian

"I've wrangled a few snakes in my time. Been in a couple car crashes.  Tonight was not in complete contrast to all those things." - CJP forward Mojo Williams

"Our ball movement tonight was the best it has ever been. The team came first tonight. It was great to be apart of and watch." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

"Was that the Golden State Warriors or CJP?" - Unknown

"Another victory for CJP. Thanks to Logan and McKie for filling in for the injured players. After we held our lead, the game got even more physical and we stayed strong." - CJP guard Lou Schmitt

"Teamwork. I guess that is what happens when I listen to Nate Dogg all day. And if Bill Self ever needs to know how to break the 2-3 zone, he'll have to come to one of our games because we can't afford a cameraman." - CJP guard Ben Gray

Curtis J. Phillips (3-3) drowns The Thunder (2-4) 66-56

Quotes

"Tons of turnovers but Jason and Sean's scoring gave us a big enough cushion to ride it out. And we hit some key free throws to close it out." - CJP guard Matt Donnelly

"Strong spacing and great ball movement, equals open looks at the basket. With open looks, we knocked down some shots." - CJP guard Sean Hunt

"We had a strong first half and jumped out to a big lead, but struggled to maintain our effort down the stretch. Fortunately we had enough of a lead that the game was never really in question." - CJP center Jason Holzmueller

"CJP's version of the triangle seems to be a work in progress. While we are able to slug out wins, we need to pull it together on the home stretch." - CJP forward Mike Logan

"Foul fast..Foul hard..No mercy sir!" - CJP center Brandon Whightsil

"Jim, Sean, and Jason. They scored a lot of points. Jim had about three and 1's off beautiful cuts to the basket, Sean had about five or six 3's, and Jason dominated the paint with hook shots, drop steps, and looked like Kevin McHale out there tonight." - CJP forward Daniel Sondreal

CJP guard Cole Cruse is out indefinitely with a partial tear of his right plantar fascia. The injury occurred during the first half of team CJP's game on Wednesday night. "I'm done for the rest of the season Danny boy. Sorry. I'll try and rehab and be back for the start of next session" said Cruse in a text message to team captain and general manager, Daniel Sondreal.

Sondreal met with local media members earlier today and issued the following statement, "Many of you know Cole as our most dynamic scorer, which is true, however what we will miss most from his absence is his heart and fire. Official 2014 Fall CJP Rosters Announced

With just under three hours until the Tuesday night CJP team tips off their Fall 2014 season team officials have released the Fall rosters.

10.06.2014

Sean Hunt joins Team CJP's Tuesday Night Team

Last week team CJP added their final player to their 2014 Fall Tuesday Night Team. That player is Sean Hunt. Hunt, 36, lives in Lawrence, KS and will be making his return to city league basketball for the first time since 2010. Sean and a few other players from Curtis J. Phillips Basketball have been playing basketball over the past few weeks in a Monday night pickup game. Most notably CJP big man Mike Logan as the two of them have been playing basketball with and against each other since 2006. Thus when team CJP captain and general manager Daniel Sondreal asked Logan his thoughts on adding Hunt to the team, Logan simply and boldy replied with "He's my guy." Therefore with Mike's backing and history with Sean and the fact that Sondreal liked the way Sean carried himself during the aforementioned pickup games they asked Sean to join the team. "I had only played basketball a few times with Sean but it was easy to see he is a confident player. He doesn't shy away from taking big shots and in fact the first time I ever guarded him I believe he drilled a three on me for the win. He also is great at attacking the hoop. His confidence, ability to get to the hoop, and clutch shooting will be a great addition to our team" said Sondreal in an interview with Grantland.com's Zach Lowe.

Hunt will be sporting the number 8 and lists Scottie Pippen, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Michael Jordan as his favorite basketball players of the past and as for present day players he likes James Harden, Lebron James, and Kevin Garnett.

10.05.2014

John Richey and Lou Schmitt join Team CJP's Wednesday Night Team

Lou Schmitt
John Richey
With two roster spots open on the Wednesday night CJP team, the team added two familiar faces. The team added Kansas City big man John Richey and Lawrence shooting sensation Lou Schmitt.

Schmitt, 24, has been playing basketball against CJP's Tuesday night team for years. He has also been playing pickup basketball with and against most of the Wednesday night players for several years as well. "Lou to be honest with you has been a major pain for team CJP over the past few years. We have played against a few of his teams and he usually has gone off for big games against us. Whether it be raining threes from the outside or taking our smaller players into the post, he has been a lot of trouble. Thus thankfully he will be on CJP on Wednesday nights so we can watch and help him score and smile rather than guarding him and getting frustrated when he scores on us on Tuesday nights" said Sondreal in an interview with Kansas Public Radio.

Richey, 33, has played basketball with or against every player on the team at some point in time over the past few months in local pickup games. In fact Richey even attended a few CJP games last summer as a fan and as a good friend of CJP player Joe Ahmadian. He and Joe go way back as the two of them were known in many tennis circles for brief but triumphant two month period in 2012 as the best doubles tennis team from the United States outside of the Williams sisters. "For a guy that is 33, 6'5", and 250lbs John is unusually quick and always on the go. Add that to the fact that he is a lefty, that he has three-point range, and can control the paint, I believe we have added a great basketball player to our team and a player that likely has the best hair in the league as well" said CJP captain Daniel Sondreal in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine.

Richey will be sporting the number 17 and Schmitt will be sporting the number 15.

2014 Fall League Starts October 7 & 8

7.18.2014

CJP set to retire the number 5 in honor of Mario Thomas.

A legend was born in Topeka, Kansas 29 years ago.

His name.

Mario Thomas.

He may not think he is a legend but he is.

Thomas fell in love with the world of sports at a young age playing three of the four big team sports in North America...baseball, basketball and football.

What no hockey?

It was two-and-a-half years ago that Thomas joined the ranks of the Curtis J. Phillips basketball team playing in the Lawrence Park and Recreation Department Men’s Basketball League.

The 5-foot-8 quicksilver guard made an instant impact with his hustle and scoring.

“He has a lot of heart and soul and he is talented,” said team captain Daniel Sondreal of Thomas. “He cares about the game. He also cares about his team. He gets along with everyone and is always encouraging his teammates. And Mario is clutch. He made a lot of big shots and plays for Curtis J. Phillips Basketball.”

Of his first joining Curtis J. Phillips, Thomas recalls: “When I first joined up we had some tough times and after a few months we had a nice run...a great run. Last year was pretty memorable as we won all four of the league championships.

“I had a chance to meet some great guys and made some good friends. Lawrence is the mecca of basketball and there were a lot of great players that came through here and it meant a lot to be able to play with and against them.”

So where does the Legend come from.

Team owner, Curtis J. Phillips, can fill us in on this one.

“I was visiting Daniel (Sondreal) two years ago and he convinced me to suit up again for one last game,” said Phillips, who made the trip down from Alberta, Canada to Kansas. “Now I still shoot around a bit but had not played in a few years. I was 55 at the time with the passion of an 18 year old and the knees of an 80 year old.

“We were in control of the game when all of a sudden the other team got hot and took the lead with a few minutes to go. Sitting the bench, and with my shoes off now, I was playing the role of coach calling out from the sidelines.

“Now in my heart I knew that this would probably be my last ever competitive game and to be honest I did not want the team to lose. I was not used to losing in this great sport as I was blessed playing with great teammates at all levels.

“With a few seconds to go Mario came down and hit a long three and then on the inbounds pass he darted in to take the ball away from the dribbler to make a layup and secure the win at the buzzer.

“You do not know how much joy the victory meant. I had an OK game with a couple of assists and steals and a few rebounds but it was the first time that I can ever remember that I had not scored. That did not matter. What mattered was that Mario the Legend had given me an amazing parting gift. One I will always cherish.”

Thomas will have his uniform number 5 retired as he is leaving for Kansas City to work in the recreational field at the Olathe Community Centre.

Notes

Mario Thomas played for team CJP from April 3, 2012 to July 15, 2014. In that time he played in 10 consecutive sessions, 63 games, and helped lead team CJP to four championships. Thomas is believed to be a top three all-time leader for the team in points scored, steals, and game winners.

Hammen out indefinitely with knee issues.

Late Monday night in a phone call with CJP general manager Daniel Sondreal, 18-session CJP veteran Jim Hammen informed team CJP that he will be sitting out the 2014 Summer League. Hammen, 31, is sitting the session out due to chronic and severe knee pain in both knees. In May of 2013 he was diagnosed with a partial meniscus tear which caused him to miss the 2013 Summer League. Hammen rejoined the team in the Fall of 2013 and finished the Spring 2014 session as the team's leading scorer. "He will be greatly missed. A true triple threat and player that isn't afraid of the moment" said Sondreal in early Tuesday morning press conference. Sondreal, also 31, has been playing organized basketball with Hammen since 1999 closed up this mornings conference with the following, "Jim will be back. Hopefully sooner than later as we still have a few more championships to win before we part ways or are too old and injured to play. He will be back."
